If you are like me, all you ever knew about Herbert Hoover was he was blamed for the "Great Depression" and he was in that song that started the "All In the Family" TV program of some years back.
Yet, this was an incredibly interesting man and wonderfully successful businessman. He became so rich as result of his business interests, with a mining company in Great Britain, that he paid his own way through all the years of his public service. And, oh, my those years! He was head of a committee that made sure northern France and Belgium got fed during the disruptions of World War I. He worked directly with Woodrow Wilson in the talks to end the war in Paris. He was secretary of commerce under Warren Harding and under Calvin Coolidge. This was at an exciting time, too, in that all the modern conveniences that took us from the horse and buggy days to modern times were coming of age. There was aviation, radio broadcasting, and an incredible maze of railroads running all over the country. And, it was he, Herbert Hoover, who helped bring order to all that. Oh, and I forgot to mention, he was an orphan and in the first graduating class at Stanford University. All three of the books in this series are excellent, but the one abou the Great Depression is not as helpful in understanding it as I thought it could have been.
Oh, and I forgot, he worked in Europe after World War I to make sure all The European countries got food. That is a story high drama, truly high drama. What fun this book is because it dispels so many myths about this great man. I just wonder what might have been had the Great Depression not come along when it did.
