This oversized book by J.N. Westwood is a fine summary to this little known, but extremely influential conflict that ultimately set Japan on a collision course with the US and Britain in WWII. The book is heavy on pictures and as a result gives a high altitude summary of the war, but it makes a fine companion to Richard Connaughton's"Rising Sun, Tumbling Bear", a far more ini\-depth exploration of the conflict. However, Connaughton's book suffered from having far fewer pictures and extremely poor maps, so I found myself reading both books practically simultaneously, putting down one to look at the pics (Westwood's book) then putting that one down to pick up the detailed narrative in Connaughton's book. Having said that, The Illustrated History of the Russo-Japanese War can stand on its own as a good on volume history of a conflict . It was a miccrocosm of the Great War that was to be waged in Europe a mere ten years later.
