Lionel Trilling was a literary critic and teacher of the old school before political correctness Marxism, psycho analytic theory, and hyper sensitive feminism spoiled the study of literature and the liberal arts in general. This is a remarkable collection of poetry, drama, and short fiction compiled with exquisite taste and accompanied with incisive criticism by Mr. Trilling. Shakespeare, Sophocles, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Hemingway, Faulkner, Camus and many others are represented by some of their strongest works.
The only drawbacks are that the anthology is from 1967 so it can't cover modern literature, and it's focused exclusively on the Western Tradition, but that's a great tradition, and it is very helpful to approach World Literature and the modern period with a strong background in the Western Classics. To use the old cliche if I had to recommend one traditional anthology this would be it.
