...in England, The Ecclesiastical Review (An official organ of the Church): "A book like Dr. O'Malley's comes as a liberating force. It sweeps away the cobwebs and the chaff. It disperses the mists of sentimentality and makes men see things as they really are, in the clear, cold light of reason. Dr. O'Malley does not mince matters. The very title of the book vouches for that. By those who indulge in the practices so unceremoniously condemned it must be felt as the lash of a whip. Killing may sometimes contain elements of courage and daring; medical murder has no redeeming features, requiring neither skill nor bravery. It is right that these practices should be shown up in all their hideousness and their stupidity; for we expect of the physician that he should save life, not that he should destroy it. The book is so packed with information that were we to give only an outline of its contents this would carry us far beyond the limits of a review." ...in America, The National Catholic Weekly : "There never was a time, perhaps, when there was greater need of a clear exposition of the ethical and Christian principles which should govern medical practice. The scarcity of Catholic medical schools, and the necessity of correcting the principles not infrequently taught in non-Catholic schools, are the reasons which just in the scholarly work now published by Dr. O'Malley. The diversity at his acquirements make him well qualified to write it. A physician of unchallenged eminence, a moralist of so high an order that for years it has been the practice of theologians to ask his advice, and a Catholic of uncompromising loyalty to the Church and her decrees, he has put into this book the fruit of prolonged study. It cannot be too warmly recommended to priests and doctors."

"In this book is discusses the morality involved in the ordinary cases of medical homicide and mutilation. The articles may seem to be intended for Catholic physicians and spiritual directors alone, but the desire in writing them was to reach all practitioners, to the end that the Natural Law which binds every man may be observed. The most vital facts in morality, the basic distinction between crime and all that is virtuous or indifferent morally, is in abstract principle alone. Twilight sleep to avert pain in parturition is discussed and concludes that these methods are morally illicit and useless.
