"Miraculously preserved on clay tablets deciphered only in the last century, the cycle of poems collected around the character of Gilgamesh, the great king of Ukruk, tells of his long and arduous journey to the Spring of Youth, of his encounters with monsters and gods and of his friendship with Enkidu, the wild man from the hills. Also included in the epic is a legend of the Flood, which agrees in many details with the biblical story of Noah."--]cProvided by publisher.

More than 50 years old, this remains in my opinion the most thrilling - and terse - translation of the Epic. Magnificent! I keep buying copies because I give mine away and they don't come back. I can't afford the hardcover anymore; should have kept that one.

Enkido and Gilgamash start off as enemies then develope a friendship. Translated from ancient tablet I had to read the tale often in high school and college. Some of the tablets were missing so bits of the story are blurry, but its a fantastic tale, full of adventure.
It was unusual to see a hero afraid of death. Most heros in mythology really do not consider their mortality. Worse Gilgamash comes from a period in history where the Dead are feared. The dead eat dust and are miserable. Gilgamash wants to avoid his fate.
