Seller's Description:
New York. 1987. May 1987. Grove Press. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket. 0394555503. The Dramatic Symphony Translated from the Russian by Roger and Angela Keys. The Forms of Art Translated from the Russian by John Elsworth. 183 pages. hardcover. Jacket design by Ben Santora. keywords: Literature Russia Translated. FROM THE PUBLISHER-Andrei Biely's early satiric masterpiece, The Dramatic Symphony, published here for the first time in any language other than its Russian original, comes from the hand of the writer whose more famous novel, St. Petersburg, has been compared in importance to James Joyce's Ulysses. The Dramatic Symphony, originally published in 1902, introduces a new literary genre. It is a lyrical tale written in poetic prose, in which Biely attempts to apply the principles of music to literature, aiming to transmit feelings rather than thoughts. Biely himself said that the work has three senses: a musical sense, a satirical sense, and a philosophical symbolic sense. In fact, these were the guiding principles which ruled all of Biely's later work as well, and critics have remarked that The Dramatic Symphony contains all the major themes and problems of his later and better known novels. Written over a period of eight years and influenced by Schopenhauer's The World as Will and Representation and by Friedrich Nietzsche, The Dramatic Symphony is the product of Biely's intuitive and youthful search for a symbolism that would herald the creation of the new man and the new culture. The theme providing the dramatic tension is the crisis of the individual caught between the two irreconcilable extremes of revolution and evolution. Musatov, the hero, battles against philosophical nihilism, for the most part below the level of consciousness in the form of hallucinatory fears that the world is at the mercy of evil forces from the spirit realm. Madmen, bandits, intellectuals, clerks, peasants—these are but a few of the Moscow mystics whose mad scramblings Biely satirizes. Connected to The Dramatic Symphony is Biely's essay written shortly after The Dramatic Symphony. Entitled The Forms (continued from front flap) of Art, it summarizes Biely's views on art synthesis and it is important both for the light it casts on his early experimental fiction and as an original contribution to literary history. Andrei Biely (1880-1934) is recognized as the most original and influential writer of the Russian symbolist movement. Vladimir Nabokov called his St. Petersburg one of the four great master-pieces of twentieth-century prose. His other novels include The Silver Dove and Kotik Letaev. The translation of The Dramatic Symphony was a collaborative effort by Roger and Angela Keys. inventory #33935.
