Sinclair has a very comfortable tone for a subject, drinking, which is quite difficult for many people to consider. Most of those who already drink heavily will NOT be inspired to pick up this book and taste it, but those who do read it, perhaps soon after reading his better known THE JUNGLE, may be able to decide that heavy drinking is not a satisfying life style to try on.
Sinclair shows how addiction to drinking leads to sorrow and depression in family and in the rich and famous. Young persons may, after reading this tract, pay attention to the alcoholics among their acquaintances and deliberate before choosing them as role models. That was Sinclair's personal experience. He viewed the heartache of alcoholics and their families and deliberately chose not to drink.

a great eye opener
Upton Sinclair writes a great book on the devastation that alcohol brings into many lives. He gives the details on the demise of many talented people through the use of alcohol and how, when they realize they needed to stop drinking it was almost always to late. Since he was a writer he had the opprotunity to see first hand many promising artists that had their lives cut short through the use of booze. Being a writer he had the opprotunity to see many promising careers cut short by alcoholism. I can't recommend this book enough for those that are just starting to drink or those people who have a drinker in their life that they are worried about!
