A charming account of fairy tale mystery set in a Victorian background. A little girl, Griselda, is brought to live in a large quaint old house with two very elderly Aunts. Away from her brothers she has her lessons alone from equally elderly visiting teachers. She finds her new life very lonely. One compensation is her fascination with the house and in particular the cuckoo clock which hangs in the room in which she does her lessons. One night she is awakened by the sound of the cuckoo and is led back to the school room where the cuckoo invites her to climb up to his little room in the clock. Then begin a series of adventures with her friend the cuckoo which culminate in a visit to the other side of the moon. I first read this book about the age of 11 and revisited it several times. I could not resist re reading it once more as soon as I got my present copy, though I had bought it to read to my grand children aged 5 and 8. They had just been given a cuckoo clock so it seemed particularly appropriate. It held them spell bound during an exceedingly long wait in an airport.
