Seller's Description:
New in New jacket. The Country Dance Book-The Old-Fashioned Square Dance, Its History, Lore, Variations & Its Callers, Complete & Joyful Instructions (Paperback or Softback)
Beth Tolman and especially Ralph Page worked in the 1930's to bring contradance from a few surviving pockets in northern New England into communities throughout the U.S. Ralph wrote this book the year before he became a full time professional dance caller in 1938. The book is written with charm and humor. It includes danceable dances and playable tunes. I enjoyed it as a very readable historical piece: it was interesting to see how the "dance community" that we esteem today has roots going back at least seventy years. The authors describe a bit about the callers, the dancers, the halls and their communities that aptly place the book in it's time. The dance descriptions are good enough that, as a beginning caller, I use it as a reference. It is certainly a resource for someone looking for historical contras. I also enjoy the illustrations. They, as much as anything, connect the line between the past and the present as one sees in them many of the postures and attitudes that are seen on dance floors today. I reccommend the book as a nice read for anyone interested in contradance roots.
