The author was friends with Hitler in their late teens and roomed with him in Vienna, where they both hoped to study. "Hoped" because Hitler failed to get into art school, while the author successfully studied music. Hitler's tendency to make grand plans was evident then, as well as his ability to ignore what anyone advised him. This is a well-written, short book. I was motivated to read it by the long section on Hitler that Knaussgarrd wrote in his sixth volume. I was in search for the source of evil.
