When the man found he had been tricked he rushed back to the market to find Owlglass, but the latter had taken off his peasant's disguise and escaped recognition. The scene of Till's next prank was laid in a university town, where there were many doctors and professors. Here Owlglass donned a college cap and gown, and caused placards to be printed in which he advertised himself as a great scholar who could solve the most difficult problems. These he nailed up in the most conspicuous places in the town. When the President of the university saw these advertisements, he called a meeting of all the professors, and consulted with them as to what problem to set before Owlglass, to test his pretensions to knowledge. After long discussion they decided to ask Till whether he could teach a donkey to read. When the President proposed this task to Owlglass, he agreed to undertake it provided he were now paid five hundred dollars, and allowed thirty years in which to accomplish it. "If it takes twenty years to educate a child," thought he, "it will certainly take thirty for a donkey, and during that time, in all probability either the aged President or the donkey might die, and in either case I shall be released from my agreement." As soon as part of the money had been paid in advance, Owlglass procured a donkey and rented a stable for his four-legged pupil. Then he bought an 'old hymn-book, laid it before the donkey in his crib, and sprinkled oats between the leaves.
