Cordier, Sinica, 355; Yakushi (1984) B170. Isabella Bird (1831-1904), was a truly exceptional women and first class explorer. she the first woman inducted into the Royal Geographical Society (1892). Bird traveled up the Yangtze and Han rivers in China and Korea in 1897. Bird was 64 when she took this journey through a dangerous and chaotic part of China and Korea. This trip took her 13, 000 km, up the Yangtze River by boat and then overland through Sichuan to Tibet. Quite exceptional for a Victorian English woman.
