Thirteenth century French Troubadour Adam de la Halle's Le jeu de Robin et Marion is one of the great masterworks of Western music literature, as important in its time as the Beethoven Symphony No. 9, though you'd never know it from the extent to which it has been recorded. Although the first modern edition of Le jeu de Robin et Marion appeared in the 1870s, it is a difficult nut to crack, being entirely monophonic and in need of additional inserts in order to make sense both theatrically and musically. Nevertheless, most medievalists credit this work with having ushered in the very notion of extended music theater in a secular realm, touching off a crooked path of development that leads to opera some five centuries later.
