First thus, the first Dublin edition. This work was published in London in 1775. Johnson's 'Life of Savage' brought great public interest as Savage had led such an interesting life. It is said that Johnson's writings on Savage was an important step for Johnson becoming the famed biographer he is today. With his well-known narrative poem 'The Wanderer' to volume II. Savage discusses his own childhood and his supposed abandonment by his mother, Mrs Brett, through his poetry. He also discusses his trial for murder. A fascinating poetry collection written by an equally fascinating eighteenth century man. This poetry collection brings a further understanding to Savage as a person, as well as his numerous contemporary influences. In full calf bindings. Externally, sound. Patches of light rubbing to the board edges. Several marks to boards. Joints are tender, with the hinges only being strained due to previous repair. Prior owner's bibliographic notations to the endpapers of both volumes and to the rear pastedown of volume I. Title pages have had the top portion removed by a prior owner and therefore have been laid down onto another leaf. Prior owner's inscription to the 'life' to volume I, 'John Salmon'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Slight age toning to the page edges. Light scattered spotting. A few light tidemarks to the fore edge and top edge of volume I affecting the first few pages to the margin. Good.
