Seller's Description:
None. Very Good. A smart, first edition copy of William Shenstone's verse and prose. A beautifully presented work, with several detailed engravings. With an engraved frontispiece to both volumes and an engraved Kingfisher vignette to both title pages. In addition to two small engravings and a folding map of Shenstone's estate, Leasowes. Shenstone was one of the earliest practitioners of landscape gardening. Being volume I and volume II, which was complete at the time of issue. A third volume was published later in 1769. William Shenstone was a popular poet, with his first collection being published in 1737. 'Poems on Various Occasions' was intended for private circulation only, but as it contained the first draft of 'The Schoolmistress' it attracted wider attention. The publisher of this work, Robert Dodsley, was one of Shenstone's friends. His description of the Leasowes. With the super bookplate of Nich Lechmere Charlton Esq to the front pastedown. A very bright copy of this work. In full calf bindings. Externally, generally smart. Small loss to the head and tail of spine to volume I. Light shelfwear to the raised bands and extremities. A few light mark to the boards. Front joint and hinge to volume II is strained but firm. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, Nich Lechmere. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with light spots to the endpapers. Very Good.
