Excerpt from The Work of the Holy Spirit in Conversion: Considered in Its Relation to the Condition of Man and the Ways of God I AM extremely unwilling to associate any personal considerations with a subject of such deep intrinsic importance as that Of the following treatise. Much rather would I have stood retired, as concealed by the glory of the truths I shall be employed in exhibiting, than have had any occasion to divert the attention of a single reader to a topic of so small comparative moment as the mere opinions of the writer. But the circum stances under which I write do not allow me this gra tification. It must be known to some of the readers of these pages, that the sentiments which I have al ready published have been conceived, unjustly as I imagine, to be derogatory to the character and oflice of the Holy Spirit, if not inconsistent with any belief of his influence. It will, therefore, infallibly be sup posed, that I have resolved upon this undertaking be cause I felt myself challenged to an explicit statement Of my Opinions; and, while some will read what I may write with, perhaps, scarcely any other design than to see how far I may clear up the alleged in tricacies or contradictions Of a theological system, it will be dificult for others to avoid associating a simi lar feeling with the perusal of this volume.
