If you want to find out what it was like for Londoners during the blitz of 1940/41, then this is the book for you. It begins with an absorbing introduction of firsthand anecdotes from ordinary men and women. Some are comical: 'She was buried for hours, and we could hear her swearing away down there. Can't think where she learned the words, a nice little old lady like that.' Some sad and arresting: 'I had no idea corpses were so small and at the same time so heavy.' (p.xii) It's not a long introduction, but it grips you and prepares you for the graphic descriptions of what these stoic and brave people went through. Constantine Fitzgibbon has done a thorough research, and tells the story in a plain-speaking script. He does not 'duck' anything, but goes into the statistics of those who used the underground as shelters, people's habits after the sirens went, the duties of the Air Raid Patrol, how many Nazi bombers and fighter planes came over on which nights, the utter devastation night after night, the use of incendiary bombs, landmines, heavy bombs and the danger of UXB's (unexploded bombs) that fell and sometimes caused havoc long after they landed. The evil of the Nazi war machine is shown with cool precision. The author quotes from interviews with old Nazi airmen, from members of the Nazi command, explains Goering's almost pathological need to bring Britain to submission through complete destruction of London, and then to invade England. And the Nazis were so close, ready in the Low Countries until Hitler decreed that Russia be invaded first.
This is a fascinating book, highly readable, always interesting and rather wonderful. The last chapter about the bombing of the Cafe de Paris on March 8th 1941 is a fitting but poignant ending to a book on the blitz. A lot of people lost their lives or were injured and Fitzgibbon gives us firsthand stories from people who were there and survived. When you finish this book, you will want to sit quietly and thank your lucky stars you were not there.
