Written as a children's novel, this book is nevertheless a very good overview of the 1939 invasion of Finland by Russia. It's about a boy whose friend is killed in the early bombing runs of the war. He is asked to join the war effort as a messenger. He is taken under the wing of a former teacher. In spite of his age, and a history of polio, he is able to ski better than he walks. He and another boy, Karl are often in harm's way. Karl has a secret that cannot come out before the war is over. I appreciated that it had a good story, was well researched and yet not graphic.
