The Olympic games in St. Louis in 1904 were unique in that they took place at the same time as the World's Fair. The book The Wildest Race Ever: The Story of the 1904 Olympic Marathon tells the interesting story of the first Olympic marathon ran in the United States. Thirty-two runners started the race. The race was run on a dirt road and automobiles stirred up dust thus causing difficulty for the runners. At about mile nine American runner Fred Lorz got into an automobile and drove off! Finally, American runner Thomas Hicks won the race despite the fact his trainers gave him strychnine (rat poison) with an egg white instead of water!
