The Olympic games in St. Louis in 1904 were unique in that they took place at the same time as the World's Fair. The book The Wildest Race Ever: The Story of the 1904 Olympic Marathon tells the interesting story of the first Olympic marathon ran in the United States. Thirty-two runners started the race. The race was run on a dirt road and automobiles stirred up dust thus causing difficulty for the runners. At about mile nine American runner Fred Lorz got into an automobile and drove off! Cuban runner Felix Caravajal became hungry and ate apples from a nearby tree! Finally, American runner Thomas Hicks won the race despite the fact his trainers gave him strychnine (rat poison) with an egg white instead of water! Of course, this book tells other interesting stories about this unique race; ideal for young readers seeking to learn about one of the more interesting stories from the long history of the Olympic games.
