Excerpt from The Wild Tribes of the Soudan: An Account of Travel and Sport Chiefly in the Base Country; Being Personal Experiences and Adventures, During Three Winters Spent in the Soudan The map of the Base' country that accompanies this vol ume was made by my brother, Mr. W. D. James, assisted by Mr. Aylmer, from astronomical observations taken with a sextant every night. They carefully mapped out our route every day by aid of the sextant and prismatic compass. It adds a portion, however small, to the map of Africa. The woodcuts were all done in New York, from my brother's and Mr. Aylmer's photographs, and are specimens of a branch of art in which Americans excel. I would, in conclusion, ask the indulgence of the public for this effort of one who for the first time publishes a record of his daily life and experiences in Africa. Seller's Description:
Very Good. 8vo-over 7æ"-9æ" tall. Hardcover, orignal publisher's pictorial gray-blue cloth. Cover and spine stamped in silver and black depicting native people and a camel occupying an oasis backed by dunes. 280pp., Index. Illustrated with 8 full page engraved plates. Most likely the second edition of this title, first published in 1883. This copy dates from the mid 1890's [with brief gift inscription on endpaper dated Feb, 1898]. The original printing contained 3 maps and 45 plates. This reprint contains all 8 illustrations called for. A clean, square, unmarked copy in an attractive publisher's cloth binding. Cloth slightly browned on backstrip and there is a very short [2mm] closed tear to head of spine. Silver lettering and stamping still bright. A very good copy of a very scarce edition of this classic tale of life among the Kunama tribe. A year after its appearance the author was killed by a wounded elephant on another African adventure.
