The story begins at about 1100 BC in the north central Ireland areas of present day Cavan, Fermanagh, Leitrim, Roscommon, and Sligo counties. Severe climatic changes are occurring across Inis Elga, the ancient name for Ireland, following a severe earthquake and the layering of a fine powdery dust across the land. The White Horse of Binn, a hill figure on the side of Benaughlin mountain, has been foretelling of these times of cold and the coming of a new people to Inis Elga. These prophesies are told on Samhain eve, the festival celebrating the ending of the year and the start of the new to those tending the Samhain fire near the mouth of the White Horse of Binn. The story tells about the legendary coming to Ireland of the fabled Tuatha De'Danann who arrive in flying craft as their goddess Anu destroys their powerful homeland to the west. The tale is narrated through the eyes of Keelen, the daughter of the leading bard of Inis Elga who is among the teachers at the legendary college of druis and bards in the village of Tuaim Dreacuin. Through spirit travel, Keelen becomes friends with Aislinn, the daughter of the northern king of the Tuatha De' Danann and among the handful of survivors from the dominant kingdom of Tir Na n'Og. Keelen learns of the history of the Tuatha De' Danann and how they fell out of favor with their goddess Anu, who destroyed their island kingdom. Although the Danann come in peace, there is treachery as forces both within Inis Elga and from a foreign power, the Formorrii, try to destroy them. Though many die, the attempt to kill the Danann fails. A love grows between Aesres of the Danann, the brother of the northern king, and a local Inis Elga queen, who is half Formorrii. The intrigues of powers and alliances keeps the two of them apart, though they do conceive of a son who one day will become High King of Inis Elga. Several years after the first attempt to destroy the Danann, a second battle takes place. In this battle, the Formorrii are driven from Inis Elga and the power of the Danann in Inis Elga begins.
