And, as with those other shows, the nerd factor is high; us Wingnuts, as we like to call ourselves, know the names of all the episodes; can quote entire scenes; can rattle off all the appearances of this recurring character or that. The full corpus of the show's cumulative text is a kind of bible to us. More than that, the show's high ideals, earnestness, and unblinking commitment to the values its characters exude have, for many if not most of us, been an inspiration in the cultivation of our own values and worldview. It's a glowing portrait of the world as it should be, and it guides our votes, our political convictions, and our service.
