These are authentic songs and tales from the Scottish childhood of author and illustrator Aileen Campbell. She combines fascinating English text with verses from the old Scots' language. She also illustrates each spread with a delightful watercolor, sometimes highlighting the landscapes of the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland. Aileen Campbell was born near Brahan Castle in northern Scotland. An art enthusiast even as a young girl, she was greatly influenced by J. Pittendrigh Macgillivray, the appointed king's limner, or royal painter, for Scotland. During World War II she served as a registered nurse and certified nurse-midwife in both Scotland and England before emigrating to Canada. She later moved to the United States, where she served again as an RN and CNM in Maryland, and has now retired in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. There she continues to paint and to win recognition for her accomplished watercolors.
