Those who tried (and most tried only once) by argument or by stratagem to get him to go along with less. Than-what he thought was possible, or to discard what he knew was good, never got away with it. Bill could be inflexible, abrupt, impa tient. But he was also gentle, kind and warm. He could not be bargained with or cowed. There was fibre in his character - a tough fibre that won him the respect of all his colleagues.
