An old friend of mine once said he considered listening to Joe Tex a viable alternative to seeing a marriage counselor; it was his opinion if you sat down with Joe's records and heeded his advice on keeping a happy home, chances were good you'd end up doing the right thing. An old friend of mine once said he considered listening to Joe Tex a viable alternative to seeing a marriage counselor; it was his opinion if you sat down with Joe's records and heeded his advice on keeping a happy home, chances were good you'd end up doing the right thing. And while Joe Tex had a great voice (a rich tenor whose openness and warmth tended to belie its strength and agility) and cut some of the most engaging Southern soul sides of the 1960's (as well as some potent 70's funk), what really set him apart were his songs, which with humor, charm and down-home horse sense offered plenty of hard-won advice on dealing with the ups and downs of life and love. While the albums Tex cut for Atlantic in the 1960's are consistently strong and worth hearing, many are not widely available in the United States; fortunately, this sixteen-cut sampler brings together many of biggest and most memorable hits, including "Skinny Legs And All", "You Got What It Takes", "The Love You Save (May Be Your Own)", and "S.Y.S.L.J.F.M. (The Letter Song)", as well as a few of his best latter-day dance tracks, such as "I Gotcha" and the memorably titled "Ain't Gonna Bump No More With No Big Fat Woman". The Very Best Of Joe Tex is a fine introduction to an artist well worth your attention; it's better than watching Dr. Phil, and you can dance to it, too! ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
