Most reviews I have read of this book focus on Ballet and criticize the author as being a whiner and complainer who couldn't cut the mustard, but for me the focus in this book was on how the dancer was programmed for failure by her childhood upbringing by her mother which was very negative and undermining. To me the book is about the protagonist's fight to escape the internalized negative thinking from her mother and resume her ballet career after leaving the ballet company, marrying, and having a child. I loaned my copy of this book a few years ago and never got it back. As I have explored my own past, I recalled this book and wanted to re-read it. It reaffirmed for me that "no, I'm not crazy", my mother's relentless negativity, criticism, and sometimes actual undercutting of what I was doing was real and not my imagination and a crippling influence on my life from which I am only now in late middle age freeing myself. My particular art is music and my instrument is the piano, but my story is otherwise the same. However, like the author I have finally thrown off my mother's influence and I truly believe it's never too late to start living one's own life. By the way, author Joan Brady lives in France and has a successful writing career.
