I ordered this book, which is the source for the film starring Ray Milland, because I am always interested to read the source material for favorite movies, operas, etc. The author continuously sidetracks the reader with extraneous characters, events and situations which are completely unrelated to the main plot point, which is the ghost story. The screenwriters wisely deleted these irrelevant elements, thereby creating a much more intriguing and fast-moving story. The book appeals strictly on a historic basis, which is that it is the source for the screenplay. This is one of those unusual instances in which the film is superior (and in this case, far superior) to the book on which it is based.

A classic!
Hold on to your seat for the ride of your life! This book is a Keeper! The day I received it...I went out on my back porch and sat in a most comfortable chair and delve into my mewly aquired treasure! An added note...Having a copy that was published in 1942... It has the feeling of being well loved and used...with the added special "old book smell" One of my favorites.....
