As a person with a hearing loss similar to Josh Swiller's and also with a few years working in Africa , I found his story unique.
It was well written, telling of his life and the people he grew close to in Zambia during his time in the Peace Corps.
I have read almost all books by hearing impaired people and like myself, he straddles the deaf and hearing worlds since he had some hearing into childhood although he struggled with the severe difficuties of communicating we all have.
He can articulate those problems well, and i would say unlike anybody else who has written on that life.

Educational
This is one of my favorite types of books. A non-fiction account or memoir of a regular person. I always find it interesting to see how life affects each of us. In this book we see two different affects of life on a person: deafness and the Peace Corps. I loved how Swiller had his own defense mechanisms that we in the hearing world cannot take advantage of, he simply turned his hearing aids off when things got to be too much--his own means of escape. Swiller does not elevate himself in this book. He presents himself with his flaws along with his desire to help the African village he is living in. The reader will find the descriptions of the culture of the village very educational and the reader will also see how other cultures can help us find ourselves. He also finds a once in a lifetime friendship in Jere. The first half of the book was a little slow for me but I became very engrossed in the second half. The most telling chapter for me in the book was "Rain". I try to remember the story he tells in this chapter to get me through any hard times.

Unheard
Well written autobiography of a young man in the Peace Corps serving in northern Zambia. The twist is his significant hearing impairment and how that impacts his work and relationships in Africa. I would say a good read about the honest reflections of a young Peace Corps volunteer with all the usual naive exuberance 'I'm going to fix the world' only to find out that Africa gives him more than he had to share.
