Not afraid to claim her faith
I was introduced to this book by a fellow seminarian, who read it as a compulsory item for one of her courses. Fleming Rutledge is a bold voice in contemporary America, who has the courage and passion to claim the message of the gospel, in an era that has seen the "watering down" of orthodoxy. In THE UNDOING OF DEATH, Rutledge confronts the situation of a crucified savior, and what that may mean to us, both personally and collectively. Sentimental catchphrases will not do for her: she explores themes of sin and redemption that don't budge an inch from the biblical witness, and true to her conviction that the bible should be read along with offerings from the current media, she intermingles headlines from popular newspapers and magazines. For Rutledge, there is deep meaning in the biblical texts which is further enhanced by relating them to the culture which surrounds us. This is a powerful book by a woman who has lived and explored her faith. In one of her other books (HELP MY UNBELIEF), she admits that her's is not a "blind faith", that she too has experienced periods of doubt. But she is compelled, again and again, to return to the powerful words of Scripture, and the incredibly moving accounts of men and women who first-hand experienced the undoing of death. In them, she finds a firm witness to orthodox Christianity. This is a book that I will be reading many times, and it would enhance the shelf of any Christian who wishes to "dig deeper" into their faith.
