This imported, budget-priced, four-CD set containing 88 songs isn't quite as "ultimate" as one would think, but it's a start. The material is all drawn from Jones' late-'70s/early-'80s network television specials, including a handful of numbers with Tina Turner, Dionne Warwick, Tanya Tucker, and Denise Williams. Stylistically, it's sort of Jones' equivalent to Elvis' NBC comeback special, multiplied by four, and there is surprisingly little filler. The sound, which was never intended to be heard digitally, or over anything bigger than a television speaker, is somewhat compressed at times, but that doesn't detract from the performances. Even where he adds little to a song such as "Proud Mary," Jones' pacing and presence, coupled with the horns and the backing singers, make this about as enjoyable a cover as one will hear this side of Tina Turner, speaking of whom, she turns up singing "Pain," as well as in a duet with Jones on "Hot Legs." Some of what's here is less than stellar, as when he covers "Let It Be," but then he does perfectly dynamic and valid versions of "I Can't Turn You Loose" and "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" right alongside of it, and then "Endless Love" (in a duet with Dionne Warwick), "Lay Down Sally," "Starting Over," "Nine to Five," and "Late in the Evening" on the same CD. And most of it works. The arrangements are modern Vegas, with horns, synthesizers, and the occasional guitar solo; his personality carries what his voice doesn't. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
