A useful, if somewhat gossipy picture of a decadent city heading into war with all the resistance of a sleepwalker, with the ever-present threat of Nazi Germany in the background cannot but make for an absorbing read. No surprise that the last two chapters are fittingly entitled "La Debacle", as there are definite shades of Zola in this book, with James Joyce and Henry Miller being the leitmotifs for events taking place around them. Some wonderful anecdotes, I was particularly impressed with the story of the German officer who turned up at Shakespeare and Co after the fall of Paris looking for his copy of Finnegans Wake. (He didn't get it.) However, at a time when governments were lucky to last more than three months and riots between left and right took place almost daily, I was very disappointed that Wiser failed to cover the political angle. Some mention could have been made of the monolith that was the Parti Comuniste and its organisation of International Brigades for Spain, as well as Action Française and other right-wing organisations battling for power on the streets.
