Such was the letter of defiance sent by the Rajah! If it could be in any degree thought offensive in stile, it was because the submission expressed in it degraded the dignity of man, by being too abject: and in the first moment of indignation against the Rajah for having so far forgot the dignity of rank and of his nature, their Lordships might think that for having written so abject a letter, he deserved to be driven out of his dominions. But surely it was in no other respect offetsive; yet Mr. Hastings declared, that it showed the growing spirit of Independence--that it was a recrimination rather than a defence--and that it breathed the language language of defiance. I know not, said Mr. Fox, in what tones or language their defiance is announced in India; but if this be a defiance, I would merely, in the spirit of literary curiosity, wish to know, in what terms an Indian would declare his fubmission. The Governor General, though bound by the essential principles of natural justice, to attend to the claim made by the Rajah, to a fair and impartial trial and enquiry into the matter of accusation brought against him, at a time and in a place which furnished all proper materials, and the presence of all necessary witnesses, instead of instituting such enquiry, and granting a trial, received an humble request for justice, from a great Prince, as a fresh offence, and as a personal insult to himself;...
