Seller's Description:
Very Good. 8vo. xii, 529pp + 2pp book catalogue, portrait frontis with tissue-guard, four appendices, bibliography, index. Front hinge slackening. Book plate on the front paste-down. Or navy cloth boards with several marks, flecked in places, with a few puncture marks by the spine foot and a section of cloth torn, but still attached, at the upper edge of the front board. Thomas Cochrane, the Tenth Earl of Dundonald, naval officer and Member of Parliament, speculated on securities on the stock exchange. In 1814, rumours circulated alleging that the French were defeated and Napoleon killed. Lord Cochrane and others were charged with conspiring in a fraudulent conspiracy designed to make Government securities rise in value. In his Preface, Edward Downes Law, Lord Ellenborough's grandson, writes that books by successive Earls of Dundonald had contained attacks on his grandfather and that, to ensure that an accurate record was presented, sent all the family papers to J B Atlay, the author of this work.
