This book is one of the best, if not *the* best, for an entertaining, literary trip into the world of the Golden Age of Passenger Steam in the US. Instead of linear historical details or types of machines, the style of writing moves between regions and famous train lines and gossip, from details of famous steam engines that pulled the great "hotels on rails" across America when the who's who of politics, entertainment, and sports rode these trains and empires of rail ran the travel agencies, hotels. and some of the best restaurants and resorts in the country. The book is entertaining to read and I couldn't put it down, graced with copious amounts of tasty photographs of the people, locomotives and trains that ran the lands, this is a must.

Monster of a book that covers all of the important "named trains" back when they really meant something and riding them was a sign of prominence and soclal standing. Beebe's writing syle might seem dated by today's standard but he knew what he was writing about and believed what he wrote.

For Railroad History Buffs
Extremely well written, engrossing captions and stories in a huge book consisting of historical railroading black and white pictures. The author is an expert on railroading and brings to life the bygone era of trains in America, from the beginning nearly to the end. Written before the Amtrak take-over.
