This book is part of W. E. B. Griffin's "Badge of Honor" series about the Philadelphia Police Department. Like Griffin's other series, "Badge of Honor" contains some memorable characters. In this series, the principle character is Matthew Payne, who graduates from the University of Pennsylvania, then joins the Philadelphia Police Department, following in the footsteps of his birth father and uncle, both of whom were killed in the line of duty. The series follows Payne and his cohorts through several complex cases, as Payne rises from recruit to sergeant (thus far). The narrative follows the typical Griffin format, which should be familiar to any reader of Griffin's other series on Special Operations, the Marine Corps, the OSS, and the beginnings of the CIA. The reader will recognize many of the characters, by type, from these other series. There are enough plot twists to keep the books from becoming predictable.
