Vargas is an original and talented writer. I've read several others of hers, and each is very different from the others. This one, which didn't feature her usual police detective, had instead three young academics who decide to share a house in Paris called "the disgrace" because it's in such rundown condition, but as they have no money, it's perfect for them. They become friendly with a former opera singer next door and when she disappears, one turns detective. The title is a bit off-putting as it sounds as if the story deals with religion, but not at all. Vargas is a pen name of a female author who creates believable, sympathetic characters. Her mysteries are free of gruesome, violent scenes and challenge the reader. Translated from French.
