Europe in 1618 was riven between Protestants and Catholics, Bourbon and Hapsburg--as well as empires, kingdoms, and countless principalities. After angry Protestants tossed three representatives of the Holy Roman Empire out the window of the royal castle in Prague, world war spread from Bohemia with relentless abandon, drawing powers from Spain to Sweden into a nightmarish world of famine, disease, and seemingly unstoppable destruction.

These books arrived in excellent condition, but I have not yet finished reading them, or reasons unconnected with the books themselves

A genuine tour de force
The history of the 30 years was written by Dame C.V. Wedgwood, a distinguished historian of the Inter-War years. It is a very successful attempt to cover the complexity of those thirty years and shows a remarkable grasp of detail and a searching analysis of the major issues involved. No doubt Revisionist historians have since made their re-assessments but any reasonable critic would see this book as a genuine tour de force.
