Very Good+ Chromo-lithograph plates and woodcuts; 8vo 8"-9" tall; 364 pages; 1876 L. Prang & Co. HC. 1st American edition. With a new introduction by the the author for this edition. Snugly bound in original rust red, beveled cloth with titles brightly in gilt to spine. Published by the preeminent American color plate printer and book publisher, Louis Prang. The 13 color plates for this edition produced in chromolithography by Prang. Plates numbered I-XI with plate III in a composite of three lettered plates, the first two (A & B) with die cut openings centered in 4 different foreground colors and the third (c) with the constant of two red dots against which the color fields show the effect of shifts in color perceived. Plates VI-XI present the effect of bold black typeface on a variety of colors with shifts to the black observed through the tissue guards. Handsome and well preserved copy of this significant treatise on color, presented with an appeal to the decorative arts and indeed to the world of color plate printing. Contents are very bright and fresh with all tissue guards in fine condition and no foxing or toning of significance. There is some light offset from the chromo frontis through the tissue guard onto the title page. Woodcut figures throughout. Shallow rubbing and flaking to cloth at crown; mild shelf rubbing to boards at corners. Prior owner name stamp to the verso of the terminal plate. Binding VG+ and contents NF.
