In Fig. 213 the half arch is divided into four segments only, so as not to complicate the drawing, but in practice it would probably be advisable to adopt a greater number of divisions. The centre third of the arch ring is then marked off by drawing the two concentric curves AB and CD shown in Fig. 213 by dotted lines. The line of minimum horizontal thrust is assumed to pass through A at the springing, and D at the crown of the arch. On the load line ae, Fig 214, lay off by scale ab = V, br = Wv al = W., and de = W3; select any pole 0 and draw the radiating dotted lines Oa, Ob, Oc, 0d, and Of. Commencing at the point D, Fig. 213, draw D/horizontally, and from / draw /, parallel to 06, fv /., parallel to Oc, fv f3 parallel to Od, and from the point f3, draw fag parallel to Oe, until it meets the horizontal line D/ prolonged at g. Then will a vertical line drawn through the point g represent the centre of gravity of the half arch and its load, and the dotted line Df ff.2ft "ill represent the trial line of minimum Tig: 215. horizontal thrust. But it lies wholly beyond the middle third of the section, and it becomes necessary to draw a new force polygon so that the line of thrust shall if possible be made to pass well within the arch ring. For that purpose join gA, A being the lowest point at the springing of the mid section AC. Join Ag, and in Fig. 214 draw from the point e, eO' parallel to Ag. Then will O' be the pole of the new force polygon; join O'a, O'b, O'c, O'd, and in Fig. 213 draw the lines fh parallel to ...
