These have occasionally been long and have Often been bitter. Deplorable as has been the ill-feeling sometimes engendered, great as has been the injustice sometimes wrought, none the less is it true that through the agency of these wordy wars the knowledge of the whole subject has been perceptibly advanced. Never has this Observa tion been more true than of the first, the most protracted and the most important of them all. This is the alter cation that went Ou between Pope and Theobald. It was the differences between these rival editors that Opened the era of controversy which has continued with little cessation to our own day.
