Dr. Francesco Varola, an international attorney, is better known as Franco Varola in racing and breeding circles the world over as a student and researcher on the Thoroughbred horse. In the latter field he started literally from childhood, following his father's racing stable at Milan in the late 1920's and early '30's, during which period he was to observe closely Frederico Tesio's operations which led to Nearco shortly before the second world war. From this advantageous position, Franco Varola gained an intimate knowledge of the Tesio horses and their contemporaries. Like Tesio himself, Varola is an Italian but was educated to write and speak English fluently. This, combined with his knowledge of Tesio at work, has resulted in this absorbing book written in English and published to coincide with the 30th anniversary of Tesio's death. Dr. Varola examines the Tesio myth, how it began and why it became so influential in its own time and afterwards. He does not set out to reinforce, to defend or to expose the myth. What he has done is to present the facts and in so doing perpetuate the memory of what has been a unique period in the history of racing.
