He joined his forces with those of the king of France on the plains of Vezelay, on the borders of Burgundy, and Richard then embarked his forces at Marseilles, but was obliged to take shelter in Messina. Ho landed in Palestine in 1191, captured Acre and Ascalon (show places on map), and advanced within sight of Jerusalem. Owing to quarrels among the Christians, Richard was then compelled to retreat, and was captured on his way home by the Duke of Austria. 3. Edward I. joined the sixth and last Crusade in 1270. He was then Prince Edward, and had but recently defeated De Montford and the Barons. Louis IX. of France had preceded him to Tunis, but when Edward arrived there he found that the French monarch was dead. He nevertheless continued the enterprise, and inflicted much injury upon the Saracens, who attempted to assassinate him. The attempt however failed. IV. EFFECTS OF THE CRUSADES. 1. They were the means of introducing Eastern formality and politeness into Europe, and thus softened the rude manners of the aristocracy of that period. 2. The knights and barons being often in great need of money, were compelled to mortgage, and frequently to sell their land, thus lessening the influence of the Feudal System. 3. Many Italian cities, particularly Venice, became famous as entrepots of commerce with the East. 4. Many of the princes who took part in the Crusades left their lands under the direct authority of the Pope, whose influence was thus immensely increased. V. RECAPITULATE AND QUESTION THE CLASS.
