The present edition is intended to meet these requests. In preparing it the authors have been compelled to summarise much of the argument and to omit much of the detailed evidence upon which the conclusions are based; but they believe that the data given will be found to be fully sufficient to justify the conclusions reached and to demonstrate the equitable claim which the taxpayers of the country have upon those who are the favoured recipients of a valuable State-created monopoly. Of the thirty diagrams and illustrations included in the unabridged editions of this volume, twenty four have been included in the present edition.
