Stirling's Island/Ember World series has long been one of my favorites. The characters are well drawn human and still many are extraordinarily interesting. The premise involves time travel, quasi-spiritual beings with vast powers such as commonly attributed to the Divinity, current era Americans (mostly Americans), considerable author research and knowledge of world-wide history and ecology covering the whole globe and the last 3,500 years, and the interplays between technology, social customs, politics and warfare, and highlights such issues as critical attitudes shared by all humans, culture-based attitudes, and the scope and necessity of individual and community action in varying circumstances.
This book is one of the best of the bunch, being the one that comes the closest to presenting all the themes and most of the key characters in the series in one book.
