Way back in the ancient days when I was a child, I ordered this book through the school Scholastic books ordering program. It was a paperback that probably cost me 35 cents at the time! I read and re-read this book until the pages were worn. Thirty years later, the inexpensive paper had yellowed and I actually searched (and found!) a hard copy ex-library edition through Alibris! I was overjoyed!
Based on an ancient Chinese legend, the story of a poor boy able to find the kingdom's "superlative" horse isn't just another "poor boy makes good" story. The plot twists and characterization add interest and the Chinese style illustrations complement the plot. Ostensibly a children's story, this is a classic tale that all can enjoy. Why a film maker has not picked up on this, I'm not sure -- it would certainly make a visually delightful movie as well.
