**To celebrate thirty years since its first publication, Pan Macmillan are proud to publish this special, re-edited edition, with a new author's note from Sharon Penman** Richard, last-born son of the Duke of York, was seven months short of his nineteenth birthday when he bloodied himself at the battles of Barnet and Tewkesbury, earning his legendary reputation as a battle commander and ending the Lancastrian line of succession. But Richard was far more than a warrior schooled in combat. He was also a devoted brother, an ardent suitor, a patron of the arts, an indulgent father, a generous friend. Above all, he was a man of fierce loyalties, great courage and firm principles, who was ill at ease among the intrigues of Edward's court. The very codes Richard lived by ultimately betrayed him. But he was betrayed by history too. Leaving no heir, his reputation was at the mercy of his successor, and Henry Tudor had too much at stake to risk mercy. Thus was born the myth of the man who would stop at nothing to gain the throne. Filled with the sights and sounds of battle, the customs and love of daily life, the rigours and dangers of Court politics and the touching concerns of very real men and women, The Sunne in Splendour is a richly coloured tapestry of medieval England.

I did not want this book to end & I will definitely be reading it again.
This was a fantastic historical fiction where everything was done right - not too many extraneous "made-up" characters, very well researched, full of drama and intrigue. You don't really need to make-up things to make the British royals any more interesting than they are and I'm pleased that Penman didn't go down that road.
The story focuses on Richard III, but begins during the War of the Roses. It then follows him through his brother King Edward's reign, finishing with Penman's take on the princes in the tower. The story is extremely kind to Richard, painting him as a very likable and pitiable character. This is not Shakespeare's Richard III.
I highly recommend this to anyone with an interest in historical fiction - and since Penman was so well-researched and used those facts in her story, you might even learn a thing or two.

War of Roses
This book is a great read regarding the period of English history referred to as the War of the Roses. The book covers all the intrigue, back room deals, and battles as the House of York gained the English throne over the House of Lancaster only to lose it to the house of Tudor. The book keeps the reader interested in the story while still covering the historical aspects. The condition of the book was as described by the vendor.

Historical Novel
The Sunne in Splendour is Sharon Kay Penman's first novel, and what a beginning it was. It is, for anyone interested in "real" history and a ripping good tale, a first rate novel. The story of Richard III and the fates that forged him. The story is one of unflagging loyalty to a brother and king who sometimes did not deserve it.
If you want to meet the real Richard III, read this book, and while I have you here, pick up The Devil's Brood, also by Sharon Kay Penman. Wonderful story of Henry II and the viper's nest of sons who plagued his life.

Counterpoint to Shakespeare
The book starts with the battles between the York and Lancaster factions for the crown of England. It ends with the defeat of Richard III at Bosworth Field by Henry Tudor, who joined the houses of York and Lancaster by marrying Edward IV's daughter. The book covers the battles and intrigues in 15th century England. It casts Richard III in a more favorable light than did Shakespeare's play. The play was written during the reign of the Tudors and is very political to make Richard out to be a monster. Recent writings have indicated that Richard was much maligned after his death. This is a lengthy book, but if one enjoys books dealing with English history, it will be very enjoyable.
