One of the earliest accounts of the Red River settlement by the first Protestant missionary appointed to that country. He come to western Canada by way of Hudson's Bay, York Factory and Lake Winnipeg, arriving at the Red River Settlement in 1820. The work offers a good picture of life at the settlement and vicinity during the years 1820-1823. During his term of service he visited each year many of the company's stations and in 1823 went overland from Fort York as far north as Fort Churchill. The final chapters deal with the Eskimos of Churchill and with arctic exploration. His journal offers a good picture of the life and travel in the Canadaian West for this period.
