In The Strength of Male Tears, Richard Campbell challenges men to rethink age-old attitudes and perceptions about male emotions, and to reexamine beliefs that lend to a false sense of manhood that seriously devalues both male and female in the process. Not surprisingly, the writer's faith experiences and Christian values provide visible references throughout. The book is divided into two sections. Part One analyzes male emotional challenges and examines male tears from different perspectives: psychological, historical, literary, social, sociopolitical philosophical, and spiritual. Several Biblical references appear in this text, as one cannot avoid the Old and New Testament Canons in any serious historical and literary review of male tears. Part Two is a discussion of social issues that profoundly impact and reflect male values, behaviors and perceptions. Gender superiority, abuse, mentoring, the crisis of maleness, and fathering issues, form part of the discourse. What is the rationale for this section? First, there are too many sobering challenges confronting the male population, and the globe at large, for us to park our emotions on the sidelines. This section is a call to men to get more emotionally invested. Second, these issues provide some basis for us to discuss male thinking, beliefs and perceptions that influence how we feel and how we act and react. At the end of each major section within chapters, there is an "Explore Your Thoughts and Feelings" exercise consisting of at least two questions/items each. A total of twenty-three such exercise sets can be found throughout the book. They are meant to enhance clinical group sessions, promote men's ministry or men's support group discussions, or provide for private individual reflection.
