Seller's Description:
Very Good+ in Very Good dust jacket. Hardcover in dust jacket. First printing of first edition. SIGNED and dated by the author in 1968. Laid in is a photo of the author's mother, a devotional prayer by her, and a six-page handwritten letter from her to a friend in Redlands, California, Dr. Caroline Mattingly (the letter does not mention her son). Also laid in are several newspaper clippings about Glubb's dismissal from his post in Jordan by a young King Hussein. Glubb was a British soldier, scholar and author best known for leading and training Transjordan's Arab Legion from 1939-1956 as its commanding general. During the First World War, he served in France. Book is solid, clean. Protecte, unclipped dust jacket has wear at corners. Bookplate of former owners laid in, that of Jeffrey J. And Caroline Prendergast (Dr. Caroline Mattingly), with the coat of arms bearing the Scottish St. Andrews Cross and the motto "Vincit Veritas" (Truth Conquers). Map endpapers. 371 pp. Including index. Free of any markings, not ex-library.; 8vo 8"-9" tall; Signed by Author.
Glubb's book is one of several covering the years between the World Wars in the Near East. It gives considerable insight into the state of affairs in Jordan and Syria before the advent of Israel. The lives of the Bedouin are particularly moving.
