EMI Plus' budget-priced The Story series presents straight-forward, no-frills compilations of major rock artists with catalogs in the EMI vaults, accompanied by CD-ROMs containing brief biographical information (in English, Dutch, French, and Spanish), discographies consisting of album titles and dates of release, and a photo gallery. The Gene Vincent & the Blue Caps volume features 20 singles tracks originally released by Capitol Records between 1956 and 1961, either in the U.S. or overseas, sequenced in chronological order by recording date, so that, for example, the set leads off with "Race With the Devil," which was recorded earlier than Vincent's breakthrough song and sole Top Ten hit "Be Bop a Lula," even though it was released later (when it became a U.S. chart entry and U.K. Top 40 hit). Vincent's covers of the standards "Unchained Melody" and "Your Cheatin' Heart," which were not released as singles in the U.S., were given such release elsewhere, and so are included. Given that international focus, however, it is odd that "My Heart," "She She Sheila," and "I'm Going Home (To See My Baby)," all of which made the British Top 40, are missing. The chronological sequencing allows an appreciation of the career trajectory of an artist who rose and fell on the early popularity of rock & roll in the mid-'50s and its subsiding in the late '50s. After his initial hits, he continued to record similar material, but by the end of the disc his sound had softened considerably as he tried to return to the charts in a different musical environment.
